Fall cure: week three

Sunday marked the start of week three for me, wherein we pupils are supposed to build a ‘landing strip’ to filter the outside world and sort of preemptively organize on our way in the door. The exercise assumes you have some kind of hallway, closet, or entrance space, which we don’t. Our front door opens right up into the living room.

Since our living room is so small, we have to use that tiny wall between the window and the front door as our sorting and hanging area.

With the recycling bin on the other side of the door, junk mail has a place to go and real mail either gets put in the box (the financial stuff goes in the box on the table, the magazines and catalogs go in the box on the wall) and anything more important than that goes in the sorter in front of the box. Before, it just kind of piled up on the dining room table for lack of anywhere else to put it.

I also found a doormat at Anthropologie (I know, who am I?). They have some seriously beautiful doormats on sale right now, which I only felt okay buying because they were just as cheap as the mats at Target but much prettier, and this one matches our house.

The next step is to clean out the closet – our only non-clothing closet – and make it have room for everthing office related (printers, large monitors) and also serve as our landing strip closet (coats, scarves, etc.). Possible? We’ll see.

I seriously need a landing strip. Right now all we have is an “area” that is constantly cluttered with my keys, sunglasses, iPod, Wii remotes, tea lights, mail, newspaper, and a weird plant that seems to only want to grow up (and sideways) but not out, so it’s all thin and tall.

I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon, though. I’ll just live vicariously through your clever designs.

I know, ours was awful. It’s a really good idea, but we’ll see how well we actually use it. I was looking forward to getting mail today, but holiday! no mail.

Is your phone number the same as you sent to my gmail many moons ago? If so, then yes, you have a friend ring!

Also: we’re supposed to throw a housewarming party as a result of this cure, and I’ve set the date for ours as December 15. Do you know yet if you’d be able to make it, or should we move it up a week? I feel like that’s going to be a very popular date … or I could always do a Sunday evening dinner party instead. Thoughts?

Where are those wooden boxes from?

They’re from Ikea, and I just noticed you had the planters on your succulents for winter post. I was originally going to plant in them, but realized they’d make good containers for organizing my landing strip. The shallower box is also from Ikea, but it’s actually intended to be used like this.
